Uploading your Website with Transit

As you know by now I am an Apple user and every day I dish out Mac OS X related tips on Twitter.

So it is no surprise that I use a Mac piece of software to upload to my web server.

Transit has just released version 4.0 which is very slick. Download a copy for yourself to try out.

For me I find a combination of Taco & Transit is all I need to get the job done. But Panic have their own web editing software that you might want to have a look at while you are over at the Panic website. It's called Coda.

Web Editors for Mac OS X - Taco

Some have asked what editor I use on the Mac and what I recommend they use. It really depends on how you work as a Web Designer. If you are familiar with html & css and perhaps even php then you'll most likely want to avoid those bloated web editing software packages with all the flashy front ends that are placed between you and the code. These web editing programs often add extra code that you don't necessarily want or need.

This is why most tecky web designers (is there really any other sort?) prefer to edit the code directly. There is TextEdit, basically the same as Notepad on Windows. Add the power of TextExpander and you have a powerful web editor.

But my favourite web editor is Taco. It has a live edit window so you can preview the results as you code. The Component Library allows you to select one of 22 components, which can be customised. It has code colouring, so you can see at a glance what code is what, a companant library, code clips, and more.

Once you've created your website you'll need an FTP program and a reliable webhost, but that's for another post.

We've already looked at icons in a number of ways. In the last post we saw how you can generate your own Favicon, in an earlier post we saw where you can find icons with Icon Finder.

Well now we have a way of creating iPhone styled icons that can also be used for as in iPhone favicon or on your website or anywhere else for that matter. All you have to do is upload your image and a pack of icons are created for you to download.

What is a favicon? How do I make one for my website?

If you have asked one of those questions before then this post is for you. What's a favicon? The word is a combination of two words, "favourite" and "icon". When you save a website to your favourites, this icon is what you see beside the favourited website's name, hence the name, "favicon".

Depending on the type of browser you are using you can also see them in the address bar. Here is what this blog's favicon looks like in the Firefox browser on a Mac.

You can change these to suite your website. For example, you can make your favicon the same as you company logo.

But how do you create one?

Test Your DNS Speed

Have you ever heard people suggest you should change your DNS settings from using your ISP's DNS to something else like Open DNS? Recently, Google joined in and announced they have a new free DNS service that is designed to speed up your browsing. But Google's is not ncessarily the fastest so you should try other options as well.

So I thought I'd do some test to see how my ISP's DNS settings faired before changing them. Actually, I have to thank Leo Laporte for this tip: Leo suggested trying out NameBench. NameBench will test your current DNS settings against a range of other DNS servers and give you the fastest result as a suggestion. You will have to download the software and install it but it is a small download and easy to install and use.

Once your blog starts getting quite large it begins to become a valuable resource. Wouldn't it be great if you could repackage it as a book, I mean a real book that can be sold???

Essential Security Tool

In case you haven't heard, Microsoft is now offering a FREE virus and spyware blocker called Microsoft Security Essentials.

This is what Gina Trapani wrote about it on her blog Smarterware:

MSE is a decent utility: it’s a light download which offers real-time (as you save files) protection, and can do a quick, advanced, or custom scan. The interface is simple and it schedules regular scans by default.

I admit: since my desktop is behind my router’s firewall and I’m super-careful about what I do on it, I haven’t run AV or spyware blocking utilities on my PC in years–without a single problem. Happily MSE gave it a clean bill of health. It didn’t try to upsell me for a paid subscription, and it didn’t report that it quarantined harmless browser cookies (a common red herring that malware cleaners use to make you think they’re saving you). While security experts who make their living selling you this kind of software will tell you not to depend entirely on it, I’ll replace AVG Free on Grandpa’s computer with this this weekend. Kudos to Microsoft for finally offering malware protection at the right price.

Looking for Free photos to use on your blog or website? Almost everyone who develops a website or writes a blog at some point needs to find images to use. Obviously you can't just take any image you find on the web to use on your own website or blog. If you did that you would be breaching copyright and breaking the law.

You could search a photo site like Flickr or Picasa for the one you need and then write to the owner and ask them if they wouldn't mind you using their photos. But a much easier way of getting images is to search for photos that have already been OK'd by the owners to be reused.

Enter Creative Commons Search.

Simply enter a search term, tick the appropriate box, and then click "search images".

* Editor's Note: You should always verify that the work you are re-using has a Creative Commmons license attached to it and abide by the conditions of the particular CC license. Often this simply means crediting the owner and linking to an explanation of the license.

Colour Sucks

Another really useful tool for creating a colour scheme for your website.

Say you've got an image in mind for the front page of your new site. It'd be nice if the colour scheme of your new website matched. This tool will extract a range of colour schemes that you can choose from based on the colours sucked out of your photo.

Here are some tips from the author's website:

Drag and drop the color results: You can move the color results around the page, click on the color strip, hold and drag, let go to drop. You can also show and hide the color text by clicking the small grey dot next to the strip.

Flickr pages: If you enter a Flickr photo page (e.g. http://www.flickr.com/photos/bitterlysweet/33358201/) in the 'Enter image url' box, ColorSuckr will find the main photo.

Web pages: If you enter a web page url (e.g. http://abduzeedo.com/) instead of an image, ColorSuckr will scan the page and show you the images on it & you can choose from there.

Use color photos: Yes, this sounds silly, but black and white images will only return a few shades of grey.

Bookmarklet: Drag and drop this link - Get image colors - into your bookmarks bar or save it to your favourites and make getting colors from web images easy. Next time you are on a webpage with images you'd like to get colors from - just click the bookmark. (Works on images larger than 50px x 50px)

Colors that are picked: ColorSuckr chooses the 12 most common colours from an image, so if your image is mostly blue with a splash of pink, chances are the pink won't get picked up.

Install the Firefox add-on: Rather than messing about with copying and pasting urls, make it easier to grab colors from images by installing the add-on for Firefox.

Icons are sometimes thought of like icing on a cake, the cake being your website.

They can also serve a very important functional purpose, sending visual information directly to the visitor with a recognisable visual image. Email and RSS are two that appear on almost every site, and more and more these days Twitter, Facebook and all the other social networks.

When building a website it is not always easy to find icons to use. Do you just do a web search for icons? Or have you collected a bunch of icons that you've lifted from other people's websites as you find them?

Avoid the possible legal and stylistic problems by using this excellent tool:

You can type straight into the search field to search for the particular icon you need or you can browse the collections.

It's very nicely presented so that you can see how many icons are in each set, a preview of the set, a link to the author's website, and a license telling you how they can be used. Many of these are free for commercial use and some are also licensed under specific Creative Commons license.

Not really a web tip but today I have a very useful software tip. Following on from the last post about a free alternative to Photoshop, I thought we'd take a look at some other alternatives to popular software packages for Windows, Mac, Linux and online software.

Rather than give you another great software suggestion, I am going to point you to the motherload that is the website "AlternativeTo". This website is an excellent resource for alternative software.

Like Adobe Photoshop interface but can't afford to lay out the cold hard cash to purchase the expensive photo manipulation software? GIMPshop is an open source alternative to Photoshop and it is free to download.

From the GIMPshop website:

GIMPshop is a modification of the free/open source GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), intended to replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop. Its primary purpose is to make users of Photoshop feel comfortable using GIMP.

It shares all GIMP's advantages, including the long feature list and customisability, while addressing some common criticisms regarding the program's interface: GIMPshop modifies the menu structure to closely match Photoshop's, adjusts the program's terminology to match Adobe's, and, in the Windows version, uses a plugin called 'Deweirdifier' to combine the application's numerous windows in a similar manner to the MDI system used by most Windows graphics packages. While GIMPshop does not support Photoshop plugins, all GIMP's own plugins, filters, brushes, etc. remain available.

Due to the changes to the interface, many Photoshop tutorials can be followed in GIMPshop unchanged, and most others can be adapted for GIMPshop users with minimal effort.

Which Web Host?

Once you have a website built, you need to have someone host it for you. If it's just a personal website you could enquire with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) as they often give you a small space for free with your Internet account.

There are also free web hosts out there...but often they want to put annoying ads on your website.

So eventually, you will want to pay to have your website hosted. There are many web hosts out there and when you are paying for one you want to be sure you have a good one.

Often I get asked who to host my website with?

The most important factor in my opinion is reliability and support. Many cheap hosts fail on both counts.

How to Create a Web Page that will Rank Well in the Search Engines

Too often the focus of web weavers is on how to create a web page that looks good or functions well. Many don't think much about Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) to get the pages to actually appear in search results.

I've listed a few mistakes people usually make when learning how to make a web page:

Common Mistakes:
1. No 'Robots.txt' file.
2. Bad use of Page Title tag
3. Not using H1 tags.
4. No Site Map
5. Not adhering to standards suggested by the W3C.

And here are some actions that you can take to improve your ranking in search engines:

Leveraging Your Links - Keep Your Google Juice

Are you leveraging your links on pages of your website?

Don't spill your Google Juice!

I get emails on a regular basis from new websites that would like to exchange links with me. They often start by informing me how I can benefit from such a link exchange. Exchanging links with sites can be effective in getting traffic from the site linking to you but it can also suck out all your Google Juice.

Sites that are linked to from lots of other sites are regularly deemed more popular and therefore get a much higher ranking in search engine results. More important than the number of links though is the quality of those incoming links. Contacting the owners of Web sites that score highly for key phrases related to your content and asking them if they will provide a link back to your site isn’t a bad idea.

The first thing I do when I get contacted by one of these site owners is check the Page Rank of their website. If their page rank is lower than my own page rank then I know that it will most likely not be beneficial to me to exchange links with them. You could be tricky and add a rel="nofollow" tag after the link, these tags are like plugs that stop your hard earned Google Juice from flowing out of your site and into theirs.

Content within your own website should also be correctly linked together so that search engine web crawlers can follow links within your own website. If you don’t provide working links to all your pages, some of your content may not get indexed….and that’s not good.

Why pass your Google Juice on to others? pass it to pages within your own site instead with effective internal linking.

Ten things that you can do to to your website that will increase your Search Engine Optimisation (SEO):

1. Make all of your links absolute, remove secondary keywords that are NOT RELEVANT.

2. Cap all out-bound links (links leaving the page to no more than 10 per page) or create a new page to keep the focus laser-like.

3. Optimize your anchor text (the text in the link). Make sure your main keyword/phrase is on the page (at least one time) as well as in the title.

4. Don’t try to optimize a page for more than 3 terms / keywords.

5. Use contextual links in the content, the higher on the page the better as links higher in the page are known to carry more weight in search engines vs. footer links.

6. Keep your pages lean 20k or less (optimization also means loading time), this includes images and code bloat.

7. Optimize your in-line code. Keep all of your java script and other programming code off page (in their own respective files and hyper-linked to the page like a style sheet).

8. Hone the focus of the page - Make sure your main keyword appears at least 2-4 times on the page and once in the h1 and a slight variation in an H2 tag.

9. Augment your pages through the buddy system - Have at least 5 of your strongest pages concentrating their collective internal link-juice towards your newest rock star page (the page you wish to elevate and send forth as your messenger in the SERPs).

10. Clean out pages that are off topic, rewrite them for present-tense relevance or remove all but a few links, rewrite the titles (65 characters or less) and the descriptions (2 sentences tops using the keywords only one time each) then republish the page and wait for the spiders to re-index your content. From there you can start building links to gain more elevation in the SERPs.
